do casting directors like to hear people audition using songs from the show being casted?
I am auditioning for Disney’s California Adventures – Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular. I’ve auditioned before and got pretty far. I used “Astonishing” from Little Women and they let me sing the whole song rather than my 16 bars, and I was planning to use the song again. I’m just wondering though, if my chances for getting the part would go up or down if I sang from the show, “A Whole New World.” Would it show I can be the character? Or would they not want to hear it and zone out? Any help would be great

This can be tough, because every director is different. However one thing that I have learned is you want to make sure you’re singing something that you feel models you best. If “Astonishing” has been working for you, keep with it and improve it as much as you can. (I would watch the video to offer suggestions but my sound doesn’t work at the moment).
Whatever you do, I would not use a song from the show unless they ask for it in the audition materials. Sometimes they may see it as trying to ‘suck up’, and your theory on them zoning out is definitely plausible.
Basically, choose something you feel comfortable with and make it the best you can. Remember, you want to stand out from everyone else.
