Disney in Orlando- best hotel for the price?

I’m planning on going to Disney this May and it will just be myself, my husband and our 4 year old son. Can anyone tell me what is a really good (and moderately priced) hotel to stay at? And are Disney Dining Plans any good? Was trying to map out where each hotel is located, because there are so many; don’t want to be too far from the action. I think we’d plan on going to Magic Kingdom, because that’s good for kids. Any other suggestions? Was going to call and check out a Disney package (air, hotel, food, maybe park tickets). Any and all help would be appreciated. Anyone stay in Disney’s animal lodge resort? Thanks again!

If you stay at a Disney hotel, it won’t take you long to get anywhere on Disney property. Concentrate on what fits your budget and your interests, not where they are located. The only hotel that seems to take longer for transportation is the value resorts (except for Pop Century) because they share buses, and Animal Kingdom Lodge because it is out a distance so that you have the opportunity to see the animals. But it’s an amazing hotel and worth the extra driving time, if you can afford the premium price.

The only other option I might suggest would be Contemporary or Polynesian, simply because they are both great hotels and on the monorail with very easy access to the Magic Kingdom.

As far as the dining plan – wow, you can get so many opinions on this. I feel that if you are staying on property and plan to eat all your meals on-property, you can probably save some money by using the plan. If you are staying off-property, you can go way cheaper by eating most of your meals outside of Disney. So since you are planning on staying at Disney, it may be worth your while. However, the next question is which plan? If your 4-year-old doesn’t eat a lot, you may easily be able to share with him without buying him many meals. In that case, you can do better without the plan. If you plan to do lots and lots of sit-down meals (which are long, and can your child handle all that time out of the parks), remember that you will have to make reservations for all of those meals. So do you want to schedule your vacation around eating? If so, then the deluxe dining plan may be for you.

Now personally, I don’t like wasting all that time or being stuck to an eating schedule, so I never get the plan. But I also rent a house off-property and eat some of my meals there. So if I were staying at Disney, I would consider purchasing the quick-service plan.
