Best place to eat at Walt Disney world for vegans?

Does anyone know of any restaurant that offer vegan food off the menu. I would like to try to dine in these places as much as I can. I hate to call ahead for a special dinner or have to speak to the chef once I get there. It is just me. I don’t like to do that stuff if I don’t have to. I am planning a trip for Jan 2010 and was wondering where to eat.

Also if anyone has any idea: What Hotel has dining that is the most vegan friendly because that will be a factor in where I stay. We already stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge last time so I want to stay somewhere else. With kids I find that I do dine at my hotel’s restaurant a few times more out of convenience.

“A vegan’s guide to dining at Disney World

Hi. I recently got back from a two week Disney trip. This was my first vacation as a vegan. Some people might think it would be hard to be a vegan in Disney World, but there are wonderful options everywhere you look. At every counterservice location there is an ingredient list for every item and at almost all tableservice resturaunts the chef can talk to you about what is ok on the menu or what they can make for you. Below is just a few of the amazing foods in Disney World. Also, please remember that this is a guide to Disney WORLD, not DisneyLAND.

Magic Kingdom

Columbia Harbor House has a wonderful Lighthouse sandwich and Vegetarian chili. The sandwich has broccoli slaw, hummus, and tomato on it. If you ask them to leave the slaw off, it is vegan. Also, ask them to leave the crackers off (they contain dairy) You might even get chips instead (if the cast member is really nice)

Pecos Bill is a burger place that offers Boca burgers. It comes with no toppings, but there is a wonderful topping bar. (beware, the mushrooms and onions are NOT vegetarian) The fries are fried in in independant frier, but you can also get apple slices instead.

Tony’s Town Square is an Italian Resturaunt. There is nothing vegan on the menu, but the chef was able to make me a dish that had vegetables, gnocci, and a vinegar sauce.

The Plaza is a tableservice resturaunt that has many lunch options. They have a vegetarian sandwich that if you leave off the mozzerella and pesto and ask for it on whole wheat bread is vegan.

The Main Street Ice Cream Parlor is one of the many places on property that offers tofutti ice cream. They are also one of the few that offer rice dream ice cream.

Epcot

Sunshine Seasons is a foodcourt inside of The Land. When I went, they had 5 vegan side salad type things (pasta salad, etc.) a veggie wrap, vegan sushi, and Kozy Shack gelatin-free jell-o type thing. There was also a vegetarian cuban snadwich that I think it vegan if you leave the cheese off, but I’d ask before ordering and also a plate of vegetarian of Chinese food that may or may not be vegan. In my opinion, this is totally a veg*n’s paradise (in the fast food world, at least)

Back in World Showcase, Morocco’s Tangierine Cafe (counterservice) has a vegetable plate. It comes with a cous-cous salad, a parsley salad, hummus, an olive salad, and other dishes. If you ask for them to leave off the bread and substite rice and leave off the lentil salad and substitute an extra scoop of hummus, it becomes vegan. I ate here 3 times it was so good.

A great snack option in Japan is Kaki-Gori. It is like shaved ice, but better. My favorite flavor is Honeydew (like the fruit, no actual honey) but they also have Strawberry, Cherry, and an orange flavor, which I belives is orange, but it may be something else.

Another snack that I love is the Strawberry Oolong Tea slush at the Joy of Tea stand in China. They also have other non-alcoholic and alcoholic slushies.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios (aka MGM)

At the Backlot Express, which is a counterservice near The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectatular, they have a grilled vegetable sandwich. If you ask them to leave off the cheese, you get a vegan sandwich.

One of my two favorite snacks at Hollywood Studios is the Apple Cinnamon Stuffed Pretzel at Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner.

My other favorite snack is the Banana Slushie by Lights, Motors, Action!. It is atHerbie’s Drive-In. By the way, you can also bring snacks into the show.

One tableservice called the Sci-Fi Dine In has a great Mango Tofu Dish. It may or may not have honey in it, depending on the chef, so be sure to ask.

At the 50′s Prime Time Cafe, you can get a vegan stuffed pepper. There were no vegan dessert options on the menu, but the chef was able to make me ice cream sandwiches with tofutti ice cream and vegan cookies. They were delicious.

The best meal I had my whole trip was at the Brown Derby. I was eating there for the lunch with an immagineer program, but I’m sure you can get something made up even if you are just having a normal meal. Be sure to call ahead though, so they can make up something special, because there is not much on the menu. They make me a gazpacho soup and vegan cobb salad for appetizers, a noodle curry bowl with coconut crusted tofu, and a fruit salad with mango sorbet for dessert.

Animal Kingdom

When I was at Animal Kingdom, I went to a great buffet. It is called the Tusker House. They had about 10 different vegan options on the buffet and about 5 vegetarian options on top of that. There were no vegan breads or desserts however, but the chef got me some special rolls and cookies from the back.
