Anyone remember Disney’s Song of the South?
Because of the obvious racial overtones of the movie and our nation’s quick movement toward political correctness, this movie was pulled from the shelves and will probably never be released on DVD. I used to really like this movie as a kid. As far as I am aware of, I stereotype people a little bit but when I catch myself I make a conscious effort to learn from my mistakes and not do it again in order to prevent a racist attitude from developing.
Do you think these types of movies, whether they be Disney or similar movies from this era establish racism and stereotyping in children’s minds that presents itself subconsciously as an adult? Or do you think that kids are not as affected by cartoons as we think they are?
I don’t think the movie should be completely unavailable, however, I also don’t think it should be publicized like normal Disney movies are, with all the fanfare and marketing to young children and so forth. I think they were right to pull it off the shelves if they weren’t willing to give it the proper treatment it should get before being in the hands of the public.
If I were to release this film, this is how I’d do it: it would have a limited release and be presented with some historical information, such as a DVD commentary or documentary, and perhaps some paper inserts as well. These materials would explain the anachronisms of the movie within a certain framework, and let the viewer know that this movie is an artifact from a certain period of American history, an era we’re not proud of and we don’t want to relive. I wouldn’t really market the video through the usual channels, like at mass merchandisers. I would mainly promote this release to teachers and in certain progressive magazines/publications. Granted, this wouldn’t make Disney as much money, but it would certainly make sure the film was set apart as a teaching tool instead of strictly entertainment that the child would just suck up brainlessly.
This way, teachers or parents are encouraged to show children and teenagers this movie and use it as a tool to explain how this is an antiquated movie with pervasive (and ridiculous-looking) racial stereotype. If anything, I think showing this movie to many children these days would pique their interest in race relations. After all, so many white people these days want to pretend like race isn’t an issue these days, when racism is still pervasive and unavoidable in daily life.
