What should I do, which would be better.?
I really want to become an animator for Disney, I have to get a bachelors degree in animation. I want to go to the Art institute of L.A. Because the animation studio is out there, and I want to be able to do the Disney internship program. My mom thinks I should stay in Georgia and go to Georgia state because It would be cheaper. Do you think I should do what my mom wants, or do what I’ve been wanting to do and go to California, and just have to deal with debts out of college?
I am a student of animation at 3dimensions institute of animation, mumbai. Choose after reading this. This is a kinda ”How to be a great animator’ list of pointers’. Ps for (1.) I really appreciate your wish to be an animator at Disney.
1. Aim high.
You must set a goal to be in the top studios in Animation. xamples are [in order of quality, popularity]:Pixar, disney, dreamworks [the golden triangle of 3d animation studios], blue sky, weta digital, ILM, Sony. And thats because:
2. The higher you aim, the easier it is to get a job.
There are two reasons for this. First, that when you aim high, you work good. And second, this is very important, there is very little ‘real’ competition at this level. A lot of people want to get to these studios, so maybe you think, it will be tough, but trust me, GOOD artists are rare. The bottom layers of any field are cramped, but the top always has room for more.
3. Work matters.
No matter what your educational background, they can only help 7% in getting a job. As in all visual arts, a person is given a job not because of his qualification, but for his talent, which is the only thing that the audience sees and so the only thing that matters. Look up victor navarone, an animator at pixar since 1999, who didnt have a specific animation qualification [he had degree in visual arts].
4. Read.
No matter what schools you join, they cant teach you everything that there is to learn about animation in specific and CGI in general. Read books by yourself to learn about animation. If you are interested, i have an excellent list of books on animation. [email me if you wish to]. Animation isnt about just doing, its about knowing the art of movement in all its forms, inside out.
5. Demo real.
This is what gets you a job. Its a presentaion of your work which you sent to an prospective employer for consideration. While a compilation of works like gags, walk cycles, run cycles, gesture and expression runs will do, its best to make a 3 min short as a demo reel [like the shorts that accompany pixar films], because this shows that not only can you model, texture, animate, render, matte paint, etc, but can also use animation to tell a story with meaning and that you have excellent knowledge of the entire film-making process, which helps do your own work better. [A pilot needs to know only how to fly a plane, but the knowledge of how a plane flies makes him a better pilot].
6. Do it ‘coz you love it.
Animation is an art, and so dont do it with an aim of just earning money. You must love an art to become a master in it. If it doesnt feel like a chore, then your doing it right. Love animation and money will come in automatically.
“Don’t chase success, chase excellence. I you become excellent, success comes chasing you.” -a recent movie.
