Which is better taking Downtown Disney transportation or driving to the Magic Kingdom ourselves?

My family is going to Disney for the first time. We are going to stay at the Hilton in Downtown Disney. I read that it takes about 15 minutes to get to the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, Florida. It is my understanding that a bus comes to the Downtown Disney hotels every “30 minutes”; however, I’ve heard that it can take up to an hour. On the other hand, we could drive ourselves, but it costs $12 to park at the Magic Kingdom every day. I’m looking for people who have experienced this first hand. Which is better waiting for the bus or driving ourselves? Is the wait for the bus at the Hilton in Downtown Disney really that bad/unreliable? Thanks for your advice.

When you exit any of the Magic Kingdom theme parks after a day of waiting in endless lines, walking about a thousand miles, and putting up with other peoples’ screaming, ill-behaved and undisciplined urchins, you will be completely exhausted both mentally and physically. The last thing you are going to want to do is slog around that vast parking lot, which is the size of many small European countries, trying to remember if you parked in Blue Mickey or Green Pluto while schlepping loads of overpriced must-have souvenirs and practicing restraint so you don’t strangle whining, peevish children. If ever there was a situation that called for public transport, it’s Disney World. Save yourself loads of headaches, including trying to find your way around a city with which you’re unfamiliar and paying outrageous prices to park, then trying to reverse that process in the pitch dark after your fun-filled day at Disney. If there is door-to-door bus service, take advantage of that puppy and leap aboard, even if you do have to wait a few minutes. Just check the schedule so you know when to catch the bus you want.
