Screenwriter Tax Question!?
I am a screenwriter. In 2006, I had 1099 income and so I did the standard deduct my home office and office expenses thing…
in 2007, Disney paid me with a W2 instead of a 1099… everything else about my life was the same… I still wrote in my home office.. still bought my own supplies… etc…
but now I am confused on how to file… do I file as a business like I did in 2006 (which is more representative of how i behave) or do I have to file as an individual b/c Disney paid me in a W2?
You file with the W-2.
Your expenses move to form 2106 and schedule A–and yes, the tax bill for the 1040 will go up, though your payroll taxes dropped by the 7.65% Disney paid for you.
