Is it ok to let my 4 month old watch TV?
We don’t watch TV as such, but every now and then I put a Walt Disney film on for her, usually in German as we live in Germany, so she is getting use to hearing both languages. I don’t want to make a habit of it, but it also just gives me a bit of a break for a while every now and then. I always make sure she is sitting a good bit away from the TV, but I heard that it can make the brain lazy if children under 2 watch TV.. can anyone confirm this?
Yes, this is true, but if you are showing her movies in another language, that is good for her brain development, contrary to research done in the late 70′s. If I were you, I would be teaching her German right along with english right now, split right down the middle. If you show her only German TV and speak to her in German a little bit, (please, thank you, your welcome, #’s) she will probably pick it up naturally with English. Birth-age 6 is a critical time for the development of the brain and children learn at a way faster rate now than they ever will in their lifetimes. Cram as much in now as a you can! It won’t hurt!
An hour or two a day won’t kill her brain, but show her stuff that will make her learn something. Even though babies cannot talk due to motor control, they can understand a lot of what you are saying, and not just your vocal tones.
I would stay away from Disney if it is not in a foreign language. That’s some of the worst children’s programming available and it teaches nothing.
