Do you have to be staying at Walt Disney World to visit the resorts?
We are driving down to Florida and will be arriving a day earlier than our reservations at one of the on-property resorts. We never seem to have the time to visit the other resorts once we check in so we thought we would do it the day before. Is it OK to do this even though you aren’t a resort guest? Do you have to pay for parking at each resort? Was thinking about Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Boardwalk area.

No, you don’t have to be a resort guest to visit the resorts. Anyone is welcome. We regularly wander around the resorts when we have time to kill. This Christmas I think we went to every resort at least once to check out the decorations.
No, you don’t have to pay for parking at the resorts, but each resort does have a different set of rules. You basically just need to tell whoever is at the little building before you enter the parking lot that you want to look around the resort. Some will just smile and wave you through, others will give you something to put on your dashboard that says you are just a visitor and that you are going to be parking there for X amount of hours (this prevents people from parking at the resorts and then going to the parks to get out of paying the $14 parking fee).
Animal Kingdom Lodge gives you something to put on your dashboard (at least they did when I last visited), and the Boardwalk guy will just wave you through (he will usually ask to see the driver’s ID first). We go to the Boardwalk area regularly. Visitor/non-valet parking is to the left once you enter the parking lot. It’s quite a walk from there to the hotel!
If you’ve never checked out the Wilderness Lodge, that’s worth seeing. The Grand Floridian and the Polynesian are both beautiful too.
