Walt Disney himself is what made it so different. Well, actually walt disney had a very unique style of art in which his animation moved much more smoothly and more intricate than what other artists could do in the same time period.
I think the only set back was that the original studio was destroyed in a building fire or something like that during WWII. However, Disney and his crew of dedicated animators kept together and made the Disney world that practically every one who has watched a cartoon is familiar with.
